Speech
The Speech program, sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), provides students in grades 7–12 with an opportunity to develop strong communication skills, confidence, and critical thinking through competitive speaking and performance.
Students in the Speech program prepare and present speeches in a variety of categories, which may include original oratory, informative speaking, storytelling, poetry, drama, humor, discussion, and extemporaneous speaking. Through practice and competition, students learn to analyze topics, organize ideas, interpret literature, and communicate effectively to an audience.
Speech participants attend regular practices where they receive coaching, peer feedback, and opportunities to refine their performances. Students compete in invitational meets and MSHSL-sponsored postseason tournaments, representing their school while engaging in positive academic competition with peers from across the state.
The Speech program is open to students with a wide range of interests and experience levels. Whether a student is new to public speaking or has prior performance experience, Speech provides a supportive environment that encourages growth, self-expression, and perseverance. Participation helps students build skills that are valuable in the classroom, future careers, and everyday life—including public speaking, listening, collaboration, and confidence.
Speech is an excellent activity for students who enjoy performing, storytelling, debate, or expressing ideas through words and presentation.
